Minimally Invasive Surgery – Keyhole Surgery

  • Understanding the Procedure

Minimally invasive surgery, or keyhole surgery, reduces injury to the body caused by conventional open surgery, because the cuts made are smaller. This procedure is performed with advanced laparoscopic instruments inserted through 3 – 4 tiny, buttonhole incisions. The surgeon will be able to view enhanced and detailed images of the internal organs by inserting a viewing scope through these cuts. After the procedure, the tiny cuts are stitched up, leaving minimal visible scarring.

Minimally invasive surgery can be used for diagnostic purposes and laparoscopic techniques are used in a wide range of surgeries and procedures.

Minimally invasive surgery can be conducted using robotic surgery where the surgeon controls the robot from a console. The high-definition 3D camera allows a better view of the surgical area and the flexibility of the robotic hands gives the surgeon greater accuracy and control.

  • Laparoscopic surgery offers a number of advantages over an open surgery procedure. These include:

    • Reduced bleeding, which minimises the need of a blood transfusion
    • Smaller cuts, which means less pain, less medication, a shorter recovery time and less post-operative scarring
    • Shorter hospital stay, often with discharge on the same day, which means smaller hospital bills and a faster return to your daily routine
    • Reduced exposure of internal organs to external contaminants, thus reducing the risk of infection
  • At Mount Elizabeth Hospitals, we are committed to giving you comprehensive care. Our multidisciplinary team of surgeons, nurses and therapists are here to guide you through the entire treatment and recovery process.

Patients can benefit from Mount Elizabeth Hospitals’ up-to-date equipment and facilities.
